  • Excerpt from PM Netanyahu's Remarks in Yad Binyamin

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this morning (Sunday, 2 September 2018), on the occasion of the start of the 2018-2019 school year, visited the Breuer state religious elementary school in Yad Binyamin. Following is an excerpt from his remarks: Attached photo credit: Avi Ohayon (GPO) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this morning (Sunday, 2 September 2018), on the occasion of the start of the 2018-2019 school year, visited the Breuer state religious elementary school in Yad Binyamin. Following is an excerpt from his remarks: "This community has absorbed people who were uprooted from Gush Katif. The lives of people who were uprooted from Gush Katif could have been a tragedy, a terrible disaster. It started with terrible pain but the State of Israel and all the citizens of Israel worked together so that the people who were uprooted from Gush Katif would not be refugees in their country. We absorbed them and they resumed their lives, their splendid lives. There are memories but there is the present and the future which have already changed, and this gives new life and great hope. This is what we did in the State of Israel, even when we did something that I think should not have been done but happened – we dealt with the problem. And haven't uprooted people come to us from all kinds of countries? Holocaust survivors who were torn from their land? From communities that they had lived in, in Lithuania – for 500 years, from Poland – for 1,000 years. They were uprooted, survived and came here. Did we leave them as refugees? No, we absorbed them, from Arab countries as well. They were uprooted, from the same war, the war of liberation. Hundreds of thousands of Jews who came here as refugees without anything; they left all their property behind. We did not leave them as refugees; we turned them into equal citizens, who contribute, in our state. This is not what is happening with the Palestinians. There they created a unique institution, 70 years ago, not to absorb the refugees but to perpetuate them. Therefore the US has done a very important thing by halting the financing for the refugee perpetuation agency known as UNRWA. It is finally beginning to resolve the problem. The funds must be taken and used to genuinely help rehabilitate the refugees, the true number of which is much smaller than the number reported by UNRWA. This is a welcome and important change and we support it."

  • ISA Uncovers Extensive Hamas Network in Hebron

The Israel Security Agency – with the assistance of the IDF and the Israel Police – has, in recent weeks, uncovered an extensive Hamas network in Hebron, which included several women who operated in secret at the behest of Hamas command centers abroad and in the Gaza Strip. (Pictured is the senior leader of the Israeli police) The network was used – inter alia – to transfer messages and instructions, transfer funds to finance terrorist operations and coordinate operations with the aforesaid command centers. The ISA investigation has revealed that the network promoted Hamas activity in Hebron including the recruitment of operatives, coordinating activity at mosques, preaching and increasing support, disseminating online information and incitement, and assisting the families of prisoners. The network also tried to take control of municipal activities in Hebron and manage the activities of charitable institutions in the city. The network was led by Nazar Shehada and Faris Abu Serah, well-known senior Hamas operatives who served various prison sentences for Hamas activities. They used several women who established a central committee to serve as the command center's operational arm. The committee was led by Dina Karmi, widow of Nashaat Karmi, the terrorist who perpetrated a 2010 attack in which four civilians were murdered, and who was killed in an exchange of fire with security forces. Abu Serah and Shehada operated behind the scenes and issued instructions to the women on carrying out operations in the field. Over the years the committee expanded its operations by enlisting dozens of recruits for Hamas activity and established numerous sub-committees. In the framework of the foregoing, several female operatives were sent to meet with Hamas command personnel, Shalit deal deportees, led by Haroun Nasser E-Din in Turkey, in order to receive funds for terrorism, messages and instructions. Severe indictments were filed recently in Judea Military Court against various network members including Faris Abu Serah, Dina Karmi and several additional female operatives who worked for the network, on charges including membership, and having a position of responsibility, in a banned organization. Exposure of the network proves again that Hamas command centers abroad and in the Gaza Strip, are utilizing all means at their disposal, including the use of women, to direct Hamas operations in Judea and Samaria. The aforesaid elements are working tirelessly to promote Hamas operations in Judea and Samaria and, to this end, are recruiting couriers for contact between Judea and Samaria and abroad, in order to transfer funds for terrorism and messages for field operatives.

  • PM Netanyahu Meets with Baltic Prime Ministers

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,(Friday, 24 August 2018), at the Lithuanian National Library in Vilnius, attended a summit meeting with the prime ministers of the Baltic states (B3+1): Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas. This was the first time that a Prime Minister of Israel has been invited a summit of the Baltic States and has visited Lithuania. Attached photo credit: Amos Ben-Gershom (GPO) The prime ministers first held a private meeting and then an expanded meeting with their entourages. Among the issues discussed were strengthening Israel's relations with the Baltic states and increasing cooperation in various areas. Israel ascribes great importance to developing relations with another bloc of European countries. Following their meeting, the prime ministers held a press conference (see below), after which they met again over lunch. Prime Minister Netanyahu issued the following statement at the joint press conference: "This is a wonderful opportunity to make a historic beginning. This is the first visit of an Israeli prime minister to the Baltic states, to Lithuania. It is deep with meaning, both in a historical sense with the experience of the Jewish people, the community that had been here was destroyed, was reconstituted really in the Jewish state which now comes here to the reconstituted democracies of the Baltic group. We're all small democracies but with giant spirits of our people. Committed to freedom, committed to liberty, committed to seizing the future and I think that we can seize it better together. I am delighted that the Prime Ministers have accepted my invitation to have the next or future B3 meeting in Jerusalem. We want to enhance it with a meeting of Baltic business and technological people, and scientists, because I think this is where our future is. We discussed two big areas. The first is the area of innovation. The future belongs to those who innovate. There are tremendous intellectual powers in Israel, in Estonia, in Latvia, in Lithuania. And if we pull them together for certain projects, and we have some ideas, clear ideas in mind, then we can make our people advance at a much greater pace to be at the cutting edge of certain industries, even new industries that people have not realized. I give one example in cyber and you can give other examples here, whether it's lasers or government where there is tremendous advancement here, and in other areas, that I've admired in the Baltic region. We can be at the forefront. The fact that we are small doesn't mean that we can't be big. If we focus our energies in the technologies of the future and we harness the talents of our people we can be very big. And I think this is the first area. The second area is security. We are already cooperating in a number of security and defense related areas. And here too I think that we can do a great deal more. We discussed this in some detail and I believe that more can be done. I unabashedly asked the help of my friends here in making, correcting what I think is a distorted position, a distorted view on Israel in the EU. I don't mean the EU countries, we are doing that on our own with all the countries of Europe, large and small. I'm talking about the organizations as such. We discussed a number of ways that we can advance better agreement. One of the areas that I think is not fully understood is Iran. The nuclear deal with Iran threatened Europe as well because it didn't really stop the race to a nuclear weapon. In fact, it enabled Iran to pursue the enrichment of uranium unlimited within a few years what would open the path not to a nuclear bomb but to an entire nuclear arsenal. But at the same time it also brought to Iran's coffers billions and billions of dollars that were used for the purposes of oppressing their own people inside Iran who suffer under that tyranny and of course seeking to expand the conquest of the Middle East to Iran in Iraq, in Syria, in Yemen, in Lebanon and in so many other places. I think that the decision yesterday by the EU to give 18 million euros to Iran is a big mistake. It's like a poison pill to the Iranian people and to the efforts to curb Iranian aggression in the region and terror beyond the region. Iran tried to conduct a terror attack on the soil of Europe just a few weeks ago while Iran's Foreign Minister was meeting with European leaders. That is incredible. And I think giving money to this regime at this time is a big mistake and should be stopped. Where will the extra money go? It's not going to go to solve the water problem in Iran. It's not going to go for Iranian truck drivers. It's going to go to the missiles and to the revolutionary guards in Iran, in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East. I think this should be changed. All countries should join the efforts to restore sanctions on Iran in order to press them to stop their aggression and desist on their terrorist activities. We have had, I believe, not only a meeting of the minds but also a meeting of the hearts. There was a tragedy that befell the Jews here. It was one that resonates for our people and resonates for me personally. My family came from Lithuania over a century ago to what is now Israel. But there is not a person among us who does not know the depth of that tragedy. The fact that the governments here have taken a strong position, both in restoring Jewish sites and also in fighting antisemitism so unequivocally, so clearly, is something that we appreciate deeply and it's also part of this growing friendship between us. So from every respect I think that this has been a very, very successful meeting and I hope to continue it as we say next year in Jerusalem."

  • Jewish Agency to Provide Emergency Assistance for Businesses Affected by Kite Terrorism

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL  - The Jewish Agency for Israel will grant loans of up to 100,000 shekels to businesses affected by arson attacks and rocket fire originating in the Gaza Strip. JERUSALEM, ISRAEL  - The Jewish Agency for Israel will grant loans of up to 100,000 shekels to businesses affected by arson attacks and rocket fire originating in the Gaza Strip. In recent months, terrorists have launched hundreds of kites, balloons and other flying objects set aflame over the Gaza border in order to wreak havoc on the Israeli side. According to Israel Fire and Rescue Services, some 300 fires have erupted in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip since border tensions rose in the spring of this year, affecting more than 60,000 acres. This has caused damage to farms in the area, and also to small businesses in the tourist industry including guest houses, restaurants and pubs. The loans will help small and medium sized businesses near the Gaza border that have suffered under the recent kite arson attacks and rockets launched by Gaza terrorists in recent months. The loans will be granted with expedited processing and preferential terms. The assistance will be provided through The Jewish Agency's Small Business Loan Fund program thanks to a special donation from the Ness Fund, which is supported by the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest New Jersey and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. In response, The Jewish Agency's Small Business Loan Fund program activated the Ness Fund for the Development of the Negev. Jewish Agency assistance will focus on business in the fields of commerce, tourism and services. Agriculture businesses are handled by the Israeli government, as they are defined as victims of hostilities. As part of the emergency plan, loans will be granted to businesses located in the regional councils Hof Ashkelon, Sedot Negev, Shaar Hanegev, Eshkol and Merhavim, as well as the cities of Sderot and Netivot. The Ness Fund for the Development of the Negev, which regularly supports dozens of businesses in Israel’s south, is one of eight funds operated by the Jewish Agency's Small Business Loan Funds program. The Jewish Agency funds are made possible by the generous support of Jewish communities, and provide loans under advantageous conditions to entrepreneurs who are starting a new business or expanding an existing business in Israel’s social and geographic periphery. The loans are provided by Bank Otsar Hahayal with The Jewish Agency serving as a partial guarantor for the businesses that would otherwise find it difficult to obtain a loan or to provide the necessary collateral. Amir Sznajderman, Director of the Small Business Loan Funds program at the Jewish Agency, noted that "The Jewish Agency's funds provide quick assistance under preferential terms for businesses, both in routine and emergency situations." • Gunshot Victim Thanks First Responder Who Saved His Life

Jerusalem, July 15th, 2018 - Last Saturday afternoon a young Arab man was attacked in the Ein el-Maghara neighborhood of Umm al-Fahm, an Arab town that lies just south of Afula in northern Israel. The man was shot several times and seriously injured by unknown gunmen. United Hatzalah volunteer Sanaa Mahameed, who lives in Umm al-Fahm, was alerted to the scene and immediately rushed to treat the injured man. The man, Hamzeh Mahameed (no relation) aged 21, was driving his car when he was attacked late Saturday afternoon. Sanaa stopped his bleeding, bandaged his wounds and then proceeded to wait for 30 minutes until an ambulance arrived to take him to HaEmek Medical Center in Afula. “He had suffered three gunshot wounds to his upper body and sustained injuries to his chest and neck. I bandaged him, provided him with oxygen and opened an I.V. to give him fluids,” said Sanaa, who has been volunteering with United Hatzalah for more than two years and was the first female religious Muslim to do so. Three days later, Sanaa received a call from Hamzeh’s mother thanking her profusely for saving her son. Thanks to Sanaa’s quick intervention, Hamzeh had made it through surgery and doctors said that they expected him to make a full recovery. Hamzeh’s mother invited Sanaa to the hospital to visit her son. “I was overjoyed by the invitation. It isn’t every day that I get a phone call thanking me for saving their son’s life and I wanted to go to the hospital to see how he was doing.” Sanaa took the family up on the invitation and on Wednesday, visited Hamzeh and his family at the hospital. “They kept thanking me for what I had done, but for me, it was the most natural thing in the world. I heard about the incident and I went to help without thinking twice about it. That is what I am trained to do and that is what I always do,” Sanaa said. second - Scene from the attack third - Hamzeh and his mother with Sanaa at HaEmek medical center.  Credit: Sanaa Mahameed - United Hatzalah) Hamzeh thanked Sanaa personally for saving his life. “If it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t be here right now. There is no way to say thank you enough. I am so happy that we have an EMT like you in our city to help us and protect us when we need it,” Hamzeh told Sanaa during the emotional meeting. Hamzeh’s mother relayed that her son had gone through multiple difficult surgeries and the doctors had told her that had Hamzeh not received medical assistance from Sanaa when he did, then he would not be alive. “I am so happy that this young man has another chance at life,” said Sanaa. “Stories like this are the reason I do what I do.” Sanaa has begun training to join the United Hatzalah’s ambucycle unit and hopes to be able to do so in the near future.
